West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said in a statement that Ramandra
Sengupta, the country's oldest cinematographer, was working with legends like
Jean Renoir, Ritik Ghatak and Mrinal Sen. He died on Wednesday in Kolkata. On
May 8, 1916 in Dhaka, Sengupta studied at Santiniketan in his early years and
in 1938 he got his first break after joining the film Corporation of India as
an assistant cameraman in Calcutta (then Calcutta). His first film as a full
time cinematographer was in 1946 in "Purvarga" directed by Ardhendra
Mukherjee.
